Air conditioning and cooling for hot summers

Cooling is part of our trade. An air conditioner cools a room quickly and can also heat. A heat pump with underfloor heating can cool gently. We explain the difference.

  • Single split and multi-split
  • Cooling and heating
  • Neat installation and drainage

  1. Indoor unit: blows cooled (or warmed) air into the room.
  2. Outdoor unit: carries the heat from the room outside.
  3. Refrigerant lines connect both units.
  4. Condensate drain: cooling releases moisture that has to drain away neatly.

Which air conditioning suits you?

Single split

One outdoor unit for one indoor unit. Ideal for a bedroom, study or living room that gets too hot in summer.

Multi-split

One outdoor unit for several indoor units in different rooms. Fewer units on the facade, each room controlled separately.

Cooling with a heat pump

An air-to-water heat pump can cool the home a few degrees through the underfloor heating. Gentle and quiet, but less powerful than air conditioning.

How a split air conditioner works

Technically an air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump. The indoor unit takes heat out of the room, the refrigerant carries it to the outdoor unit, which releases it outside. In winter the same unit can run in reverse and heat.

Work on the refrigerant circuit may only be carried out by a technician with the right refrigerant certification. So a fixed air conditioner is best installed by a professional.

What we look out for when installing

  • The right capacity for the room, so the unit does not keep switching on and off.
  • A spot for the outdoor unit where noise and looks do not bother the neighbours.
  • Short, neat pipework and proper condensate drainage.
  • Positioning the indoor unit so no cold draught blows on you.

Frequently asked questions

Isn’t a portable air conditioner a good alternative?

A portable unit is cheap, but noisy and less efficient, because the hot air has to leave through a hose and an open window. A fixed split unit cools more quietly and efficiently.

Does air conditioning need maintenance?

Yes. Cleaning the filters regularly keeps the air healthy and consumption low. A periodic check by a technician also inspects the refrigerant circuit.
